I decided to participate in the Globalization program at Venice International University because I was looking for an opportunity to broaden my knowledge in the management of cultural heritage. VIU offers a specialization track in Economics, Management and Digital Technologies Applied to Cultural Heritage which matched my interests perfectly. Initially, I had only planned to spend the Fall semester at VIU, but I decided to prolongate my studies to Spring.
My decision was based on my overall great experience in my first semester. I felt that the course covered the themes which were fresh and up-to-date with current global debates. I highly appreciated the opportunity to participate in discussions within a diverse international group - whether as part of the courses or at Lunch2B meetings. The discussions were lively, eye-opening, and always left me with a questioning mind. Professors did a great job at inspiring and encouraging students by knowing how to make us tackle intriguing questions.
On the other hand, I feel like I still had enough time to experience the magnificent ambiance of Venice, to bond with my peers from all over Europe, and to enjoy all the other perks that the city has to offer. Covid-19 at certain points made these experiences somewhat difficult, but at the same time also made me grow in my resilience.

VIU is an environment that pushed me to grow and expand my knowledge daily. Little wonder that when we were given the opportunity to apply for VIU internships I decided to take this chance as well. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 postponed its beginning, but I am hoping that I will be able to start it at the end of the spring semester.

I would recommend VIU to any young person that wishes to grow in their capacities – not only academic but also that of becoming a citizen of the world. I gained (hopefully) lifelong friendships and I could hardly imagine a better way to conclude my study at university.

VIU Virtual Exchange – GP Students

For students of the Globalization Program

A really valuable part of studying at VIU is meeting students from different places, with different backgrounds, and studying in different disciplinary areas.

The VIU Virtual Exchange is an innovative and enriching initiative. The first edition of the VIU Virtual Exchange was launched in Fall 2020 within the framework of the Erasmus+ Virtual Exchange project promoted and supported by the European Commission.
It is an opportunity for students enrolled in the Globalization Program to get to know each other and to engage in interesting conversations about topics that are relevant to their lives today.

Among the aims of the project is the creation of an environment in which we, as the VIU community which you are part of, cultivate global awareness and global competence, and increased social and cultural openness.

Topics:

- Communication in the “virtual exchange”: introduction to the challenges of interpersonal communication in encounters that take place in an international and intercultural setting.

- Culture(s) and imagination: how stereotypes and expectations shape the image we have about the other people's countries, languages and identities.

- Gender and sexuality: Participants will discuss how gender models and ideas about sexualities change from place to place and over time.

- Migration, race and religion: participants will discuss the difference of thought that can be created between people based on migratory backgrounds, and the “racial” and religious characteristics.

Furthermore, a facilitator will lead the discussion and help you during the live sessions. The facilitator has a neutral role, he/she helps with the progress of the discussion. The facilitator will create a safe space in which participants are free to express their thoughts and feelings without being judged for it.

How does it work?

Each week participants will find some articles or videos related to a topical issue that will be the subject of discussion for the live sessions. You will meet your peer group for a live online discussion once a week.

The materials – reading, video, exercises – will be released week-by-week on the VIU Moodle eLearning platform. They are selected to help stimulate your reflections on the topics.

The 4 weeks topics are:
- Week 1 (July 4-8): Communication in the “virtual exchange”
- Week 2 (July 11-15): Culture(s) and imagination
- Week 3 (July 18- 22): Gender and sexuality
- Week 4 (July 25-29): Migration, race and religion

The choices for the online discussion groups are:

Tuesdays 3 -4.30 pm (CEST)
Wednesdays 10-11.30 am (CEST)
Thursdays 3-4.30 pm (CEST)
Fridays 10-11.30 am (CEST)

Once you choose your preferred time slot for your online discussion group, your live discussion session will be on the same day and at the same time each week.

VIU is a consortium of 20 universities from around the world with a common campus on an island in Venice, Italy.

Today's globalized world needs flexible minds, able to move across disciplines, capable of tackling challenges with innovative humanistic approaches while recognizing the importance of environmental and economic sustainability and natural and cultural heritage and understanding, while communicating and working with people from other cultures.

VIU programs bring together talented, motivated students from the member universities in a truly multicultural, international, and interdisciplinary environment. Global Virtual Exchange is an innovative and enriching initiative by VIU: an online peer-to-peer, facilitated education program promoting intercultural communication through discussion on topical themes relevant to our lives in the present day.

This opportunity is open to all students from any area of study in our member universities. As a participant of the Global Virtual Exchange, you will be part of a diverse group of students from all around the world, sharing multifaceted backgrounds and experiences in a truly cross-cultural and interdisciplinary learning experience.


Topics

- Communication and media

The challenges of interpersonal communication and how social media shapes the way we represent ourselves.

- Culture(s) and identities

Stereotypes and cultural identity: how much do we allow these elements to shape the image and expectation we have of other cultures?

- Discrimination (e.g. gender, race, religion)

Explore how gender and identity have evolved over the last few decades and how this has impacted existing divisions in our society. What do you understand about 'cancel culture' and should everything be up for discussion?

- Topic of choice chosen by the group

Each group will agree on a topic from a suggested list for the last session.

A facilitator take part to the discussion to support the live sessions. The facilitator has a neutral role: s/he helps with the progress of the discussion and creates a safe space where participants are free to express their thoughts and feelings.

How does it work?

Over the course of four weeks, students will engage in discussion on topics that are relevant to their lives in the present day.

Supporting materials – readings, videos, exercise – will be posted weekly on the VIU Moodle eLearning platform. The materials have been selected to support the participants’ reflections on the topics.

Structure

- Asynchronous discussion forum

- Real-time facilitated sessions to discuss a variety of themes among peers

_Week 4 | June 26-30: Topic of choice of the group

Participants will choose one of the following weekdays and timeslots and meet their group at the same time each week:

Thursdays 3.00 - 4.30 pm (CEST)

Fridays 10.00 - 11.30 am (CEST)
