“The VIU program provides many opportunities for interdisciplinary study. I have students in my class who are majoring in art history and economics, raging all the way from that to people who are nursing major. So that is different from what I normally teach. Normally I have students who are more focused on science careers. Actually I have learned a huge amount by teaching people who are in other fields.”

“For chemistry in particular it is challenging when there are students coming with different levels of chemistry experience. So I have been trying to address that by providing some foundation chemistry but also making sure that people who have years of chemistry in their background still are learning new things with every single class that I teach.”

Prof. Danielle Hipkins | University of Exeter

We interviewed Prof. Hipkins to learn more about her experience at VIU in the Globalization Program.

“I think that teaching such a diverse group of students from such a wide range of different countries has been the most positive aspect of this experience here for me. It’s been so great to have the students bring their own ideas and experiences to both classes.”

“Overall I would describe my experience as very positive. I have also enjoyed the fact that it is quite a small program and that there are activities that involve the students outside the class, in particular I felt that the plenary event was very successful and a lovely opportunity for students to understand more how courses were connected. So I just appreciate the sort of care in sense of community that we found in the Globalization Program, it’s very exciting. And the island itself is quite utopian in its approach to learning.”

Prof. Christof Mauch | LMU

We interviewed Prof. Mauch to learn more about his experience at VIU in the Globalization Program.

“Sometimes you do have to adapt, because of the diversity of the students, also because for some of them it can be difficult to follow and you may need a break. So what happened recently for instance is that my students said, it was a beautiful sunny day, why don’t we go outside? We had to do something inside but we decided to go outside and we were sitting on the lawns of the island. We decided to discuss from an environmental history perspective the story of the lawn, of grass.”

“The dearest part of this program is the fact that we are all sitting on the same boat. And I don’t mean this only metaphorically but I mean it – it’s a small community and every day you come by vaporetto from San Zaccaria to San Servolo for ten minutes, and then ten minutes to go back. And there are the students, and professors, everybody sitting on the same boat. You can talk, professors talk to students, students to students, ecc. It is a small community and you get to know everybody within a short time.”

“I think everybody would gain a lot by being a professor here. Not only because of the internationality of the place, not only because of the beauty of the place. I mean, where can you teach on an island? But also because you can learn something about Venice that you can never learn unless you are here for several months. (…) If you live here for three and a half months, you are really involved with the city. It makes it enjoyable and a very memorable experience.”

Beyond the Skin - Art and science project in Venice

In early September 2024, a 10-day international art and science project will be held in Venice on SKIN, participated by dozens of artists and scientists. A variety of aspects will be presented and integrated: layers, covers, boundaries, sensation, itching, communication, wrinkles, hair, sweat, beauty, wound healing, burns, transplants and fillers, chameleon and octopus skins, snake shedding, furs, tree and soil bark, skin and mental diseases, smallpox and rashes, tattooing, fashion, ancient scrolls, mummies, the microbiome envelope, curtain covers of buildings, urban and extreme environment architecture, car and machine design, economics, anthropology, mythology, literature, poetry, theatre, cinema and more.

This lab and art camp includes a digital exhibition, performance, poetry, hybrid roundtable discussions with artists and scholars from all over the world, a website and a book. This is a unique and innovative opportunity to take part in the Biennale, one of the most important cultural events in the world.

We would welcome brief 5-7 minutes presentations, brief articles and artworks, by the VIU students, former students and faculty of the consortium. Any discipline is welcome. No physical presence is required to be included.
