Critical Infrastructure Resilience Summer School - II Edition 2018

July 16 – 20, 2018

In its second edition, the VIU Summer School on Critical Infrastructure Resilience (CIR) brings together academics and professional experts to discuss an emerging topic with a pragmatic and scientific approach.
The School, led by the University of Rome Tor Vergata, explains how critical infrastructure works and fails; its cascading impact from local to global, and the strategies to use to build a resilient society.
 
The course will discuss the concept of CI and the EU framework, and present a series of tools and solutions for resilience. The participants will gain (i) a clear understanding of the key concepts, (ii) a methodology to apply it to their specific field/scale, and (iii) an overview of specific tools and solutions from recent applications. The course consists of a mix of theoretical knowledge, case studies/projects and hands-on exercises. The beautiful city of Venice is an ideal place that participants can use to identify a critical infrastructure, assess its risk and develop resilience strategies.

Course outline
The 5-day course consists of 10 modules: 

M1 – Definition & role of critical infrastructure
M2 – The EU framework
M3 – Cascading impacts & ranking criticality
M4 – Risk assessment & developing scenarios
M5 – CI Resilience solutions from infrastructure, business and agriculture
M6 – Key policy challenges to critical infrastructure resilience 
M7 – Life-cycle-based design and assessment of civil systems under multiple hazards
M8 – Critical Impacts of Climate Change on Transport Infrastructure Planning
M9 – Decision-making under uncertainty
M10 – RiskApp, presentation and logic of a cascading impact estimation software

Target
Graduate students and working professionals from any university, research institute, or other organization (private companies, government agencies, NGOs) with an interest in critical infrastructure issues and ability to read and write fluently in English. Advanced undergraduates will also be considered.

Application procedure and costs
Students of VIU member-universities: € 300 incl. VAT.
Students of other universities/professionals: € 600 incl. VAT.
The fees will cover tuition, course materials, accommodation in share rooms at the VIU campus, lunches in the VIU cafeteria and Social events.

DISCO Project | Data-driven, Integrated, Syncromodal, Collaborative and Optimized Urban Freight Meta Model

DISCO develops and demonstrates a federated European urban freight data space as data sharing on digital urban logistics solutions and smart tools for decision making. It will be a continental Ten-T (Trans-European Transport Network) with replicable Use Cases, built upon drivers to code transformation of urban planning and land use by an open and collaborative Data Space with a smart governance model.

VIU_TeDIS is one of the partners of the DISCO project financed by the Horizon Europe Program.

DISCO | EPA conference - September 17-18, 2025

DISCO will be featured at the session “Workshop ‘Curbside Management – EU funded DISCO Project: Innovative Solutions to Reshape Urban Space’. 

Organized by the European Parking Association (EPA) from its new base in Brussels, the 21st European Parking Conference & Exhibition is the next edition of the sector’s flagship biennial event.

The conference and exhibition are dedicated to showcasing innovation in smart parking management and how this innovation will help shape the future of sustainable urban mobility across Europe and beyond.

Policymakers, industry experts and public authorities will tackle pressing issues such as electromobility and its impact on parking (both on and off-street); kerbside management and urban logistics; and digitalization and data sharing as mandated by EU legislation and required commercially to ensure digital visibility.

DISCO | General Assembly - March 26th and 27th, 2025

The first DISCO General Assembly of 2025 was held online over two productive days, on 26th and 27th March 2025. This virtual gathering brought together all project partners to reflect on recent achievements, share key updates, and align on the next steps for the project’s development.

The DISCO project Kick-off meeting was held in Brussels on May 16-17, 2023.

DISCO | RTR Conference on February 11th 2025

DISCO will be presented at the RTR Conference during the session "Digital innovative solutions for sustainable urban logistics" on the 11th February 2025, 16:30-18:45

The European Conference on Results from Research Projects on Road Transport (RTR Conference) will return for a 7th time in Brussels, Belgium from 5-7 February 2024.

DISCO | Urban Logistic Innovation Day - June 4, 2024

DISCO will be part of the Urban Logistics Innovation Day that will be held on the 4th of June in Brussels.

Innovation is key to decarbonizing urban freight transport and improving the sustainability of urban logistics. This event brings together innovation practitioners from the urban logistics sector and forward-thinking cities to promote the use of innovative technologies, such as the Physical Internet, to achieve sustainability goals. It will discuss trends, challenges, and cooperation opportunities, and facilitate dialogue between public and private sectors to create a policy framework for zero-emission urban freight.
