Tsinghua University is glad to offer to two VIU students the possibility to take part in the two-week summer school "Experiencing China" 2019 edition, that will be held at Tsinghua University, Beijing, from July 11th – 24th, 2019.

This summer school is a good opportunity for students with little to no experience of China to gain firsthand experience of China, and also get to know more about Tsinghua University.

The program offers small interactive classes, and there are seven tracks available in the Chinese context. These are Architecture, Creative City, Environment, International relations, Gender Studies, Industry Frontiers and Urbanization. Participants will be engaged with keynote lectures, project discussions, interactive workshops, and site visits with fellow students coming from more than 50 countries and regions across the world. Students who complete the summer school will receive an official transcript and two academic credits from Tsinghua University.

Two places with a fee waiver scholarship are reserved for VIU students (undergraduate or 1st year postgraduate).

The scholarships cover tuition fees and accommodation on campus.

Return flight and insurance policy will be paid by participants.

Venice International University (VIU), Ca' Foscari University of Venice and Venice Diplomatic Society, with the support and participation of Europe Direct of the City of Venice and the European Parliament Research Service will organise the third edition of the Venice Universities' Model European Union on 10-12 May 2019.

The Venice Universities' Model European Union is organised under the patronage of the European Parliament, and also of the Council of Europe Programme Office in Venice.

The Model European Union is a simulation of the EU legislative procedure. The participants will adopt the roles of the members of the European Commission, European Parliament and Council of the European Union, following the steps of the ordinary legislative procedure by which directives and regulations are adopted.

The organizing committee chooses the sample Directives in advance, so that the participants will be well prepared on arrival to the VeUMEU in May.

For the 2019 edition the Directives that will be adopted for the simulation are:

REGULATION EU 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)) (EP procedure 2012/0011(COD)).

REGULATION (EU) 2017/2403 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 12 December 2017 on the sustainable management of external fishing fleets, and repealing Council Regulation (EC) No 1006/2008. (EP procedure 2015/0289(COD)) .

The VeUMEU is an excellent opportunity for students to gain an understanding of multilateral diplomacy, and to hone their negotiating and leadership while practising public speaking.
Students will learn about the legislative process, rules of procedure, revision and introduction of amendments and how to draft EU Directives and Regulations.
A group of students will also form the Press Corps, reporting on developments during the weekend of activities.

The VeUMEU is organized with the support of Europe Direct of the City of Venice, and included in the Venetian celebrations of Europe Day.

Two policy analysts from of the European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS) will participate in the VeUMEU, providing their expert advice and guidance to the students during the deliberations.

Irina Popescu is a policy analyst for fisheries in the European Parliamentary Research Service. She previously worked in the Parliament’s secretariat of the Committee on Fisheries (PECH), and in the Policy Department B - Structural and internal policies, where she dealt with fisheries issues, providing internal and external expertise to the PECH committee. Prior to joining the European Parliament, Irina was a marine scientist at Geoecomar (Romania), Ifremer and the University of Lille (France) and the University of Gent (Belgium). She holds a PhD in marine geosciences from the European Institute for Marine Studies of the University of Brest, France.

Shara Monteleone is a Policy Analyst in the Citizens’ Policy Unit of the Members’ Research Service within EPRS. Previously, she worked as a legal researcher (Rosalind Franklin Fellow) at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands). Involved for many years as a legal researcher in European projects related to privacy and data protection in the information society, she has also worked for INRIA (France), the European University Institute (EUI), and the European Commission (JRC), addressing policy and legal issues of the emerging technologies, including behavioural studies in the field of privacy protection. She published several journals and conference papers.

In advance of the event, EPRS has provided Topical Digests to the student participants on the issues that will be discussed and debated during the simulation. See the documents below in the Support material section.

The participation is open to students of Ca' Foscari, EIUC, VIU and VIU member universities.
Applications are now closed. 

The selection of the participants and attribution to institutions/committees is supervised by the Organizing Committee in order to reach the highest level of international participation.

A preparatory intensive workshop will be organized at Venice International University on Saturday April 13, from 9am to 4pm.

Participants must attend at least 70% of the activities (VeUMEU May 10-11-12 and the preparatory workshop), a certificate of attendance will be issued.

The new edition of the Biennale College Danza includes two international calls dedicated to young dancers and to new choreographers, as set forth in the project by Director Marie Chouinard. The calls are now online and will remain open as follows:
- the call for dancers until 16th January 2019.
- the call for choreographers until 23rd January 2019.

DANCERS: aimed at a maximum of 15 young dancers aged 18 to 25, with a solid training and previous qualifying experience, required to participate in a 13-week intensive programme (1st April > 30th June 2019) with daily training sessions held by internationally renowned teachers.
In the final phase of the programme, the dancers will be involved in a new creation developed for them by choreographer Alessandro Sciarroni which, together with the final results of the project Set and Reset/Reset of the Trisha Brown Dance Company, will be presented to the public in a single event of the 13th International Festival of Contemporary Dance.

CHOREOGRAPHERS: aimed at new choreographers, aged 32 and under, for the production of an original 20-minute work. The selection will designate up to 3 choreographers.
The 3 selected choreographers will be involved from 14th May to 30th June 2019; from 21st May to 30th June 2019 they will work with 7 professional dancers for a period of 6 weeks, ending with a public performance of each of the 3 original creations during a single event as part of the 13th International Festival of Contemporary Dance.

A satellite event of the Council of Europe's World Forum for Democracy.

The Plenary Workshop consists in an alternation of short talks and short game-theater performances by VIU students and professors on a specific theme, which is approached from different angles. This semester the Workshop will be devoted to Gender, the same topic of the 2018 World Forum for Democracy.

Aspects of Gender covered by short talks will span from social exclusion and mobilization, to digital ethics; from the gender binary in medical arenas, to the role of women for the resilience of biological diversity; from gender in the Italian Language and in Intercultural Communication; from masculinity in Russian History and Hollywood silent movies, to the women's role in Japanese Nation-Building; from the representation of Women in Russian Jewish Art to Gender in Renaissance and present time Venice.

The Workshop will include a collective discussion on "Gender Inequality. Solutions?"

The VIU Workshop is a satellite event of the World Forum for Democracy of the Council of Europe which will take place in Strasbourg from 19 to 21 November 2018.

The World Forum for Democracy 2018 will be dedicated to gender equality and women’s rights. It will focus in particular on women’s public, political and economic participation and on combating violence against women in the wake of #MeToo.

Scholarships are offered by Comitato Leonardo to students of Italian universities who wrote their thesis on issues related to the sectors of Italian excellence (design, fashion, technology and innovation, etc.)

Key event in which VIU professors and students of the Globalization Program will play around and discuss the theme of Apocalypse. Small talks, presentations, readings, video clips, live and recorded music and performances will stem out of the courses taught at VIU this Spring semester and from an intensive theater workshop devoted to the theme directed by Prof. Gad Kaynar Kissinger, professor of Theater Studies at Tel Aviv University, theater actor and director.
The idea is to deal with the topic from multiple perspectives and disciplines.

The workshop shall cover the different aspects of apocalypse: its gloomy imagery, the sense of the end of the world as we know it, the attempts to prevent it, the efforts to accept and adapt to disruptive change, the will to exploit the opportunities offered by it, the triumphal resurrection, which could follow starting from scratch.

It shall quickly touch themes such as Apocalypse in Art after the fall of Constantinople, apocalypse in Asian Cultures, apocalypse in Islam; the vulnerability of energy systems, apocalypse in Venice, the apocalypse of truth with the spread of fake news, apocalyptic visions of migration; climate change economics, the efforts of international Law to prevent nuclear war; spiritual reactions to the Fukushima disaster; apocalypse as an opportunity of innovation and revolution.

Hiroshi Nishihara taught "Social Exclusion and Human Rights" and "Comparing East and West" at VIU in Fall 2017. He was due to return to Venice in February, to teach in the Spring 2018 semester, when he tragically passed away in a car accident in Tokyo. He was highly esteemed by colleagues, students and staff.

Now three VIU Law professors of Fall 2017 are rejoining to pay a tribute to his intellectual and scholarly contributions.

Nishihara was Professor of Constitutional Law at Waseda University, where he has also been Dean of the Graduate School of Social Sciences and Director of the Institute of Social Sciences. He was National Bar Examiner for the Ministry of Justice of Japan. He was internationally renowned and author of a number of authoritative academic books and articles in Japanese, German and English, and of a book, explaining the Japanese Constitution to primary and middle school students. His main fields were Constitutionalism, Fundamental Theories on Human Rights, Constitution of the Welfare State and Sex Equality.

Nishihara was a champion of "constitutional values", historically understood in the framework of Human Rights and Democracy. He thought, that in today's plural societies, which are challenged by multiculturalism and feminism, "the significance of constitutional values lies not in maximizing the contribution to national culture at the expense of the rights and interests of minorities, but in making peaceful coexistence possible". In our cosmopolitan world, he believed, constitutional values had to be established at a global level.

VIU students have the opportunity to participate in the International Summer Program in Management, China Segment (ISPM-CH Segment) organized by the University of Padua.

The two-week intensive summer course focuses on "Intercultural Management: theory and practice" and will take place at Guangzhou University, Canton region, China from June 25 to July 6, 2018 (dates may vary slightly).
The course is awarded 6 ECTS.

The summer course, which is taught in English, is open to VIU students enrolled who are taking at least two courses at VIU (12 ECTS) during the Spring 2018 semester.
The candidates must be graduate students (registered for Master's degree at their home universities) in the following disciplines:
- Economics and/or Management
- Politics
- International relations or International Law
- Urban Planning and Development
Some students will be awarded scholarships to contribute to their travel costs. Lodging expenses will be covered by the host institutions, Guangzhou University.

Basic knowledge of Chinese language, equivalent to level A1 in the European Framework, is a requirement for participation. Candidates who have no knowledge of Chinese, can take a Chinese language course at the University of Padua. A final exam is scheduled at the end of the course. Only students who successfully pass the exam will be admitted to the summer school.

This will be the second edition of the joint initiative of Venice International University, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and Venice Diplomatic Society (VDS), and this year the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights - EIUC.

The VeUMUN is an excellent opportunity for students to gain an understanding of multilateral diplomacy, and to hone their negotiating and leadership skills while practising public speaking. Participants will act like real UN delegates participating in sessions of various UN committees; a group of students will also form the Press Corps, reporting on developments during the weekend of activities. 

The MUNs have certain common goals: providing a deeper understanding of multilateral diplomacy; strengthening negotiating and leadership skills; improving the ability to anticipate evolving scenarios of complex issues. In simulations lasting a few days, Delegates are called upon to debate about specific issues related to the domain of international relations ultimately producing a Resolution about the debated topic.

The Venice Universities' Model United Nations will take place at Venice International University with a focus on threatened heritage.

Places are limited and participation is open to students of Ca' Foscari, EIUC, VIU and VIU member universities with an interest in international relations, international law, cultural heritage and United Nations working procedures. 
The participation in the VeUMUN simulations is free of charge. Lunch break and public transports are at participants’ expense.

* Withdrawals after October 16 will be accepted without consequences only in case of: certified university commitments and health issues. Selected candidates who fail to show up on the first day of simulation without any of these justifications will be banned from similar VDS or VIU activites during the academic year.

On the occasion of the 57th International Art Exhibition - Biennale di Venezia, and following the positive experience of the 2015 edition, San Servolo island hosts Dicono dell’Arte, a series of conferences dedicated to contemporary art. The cycle is organized by: San Servolo srl, Collegio Internazionale Ca' Foscari, Venice International University and Waterlines – artistic and literary residencies.

Prominent contributors to the fields of photography and image, design, writing, theology and economics of art will meet university students and the public who are interested in sharing experience and ideas about the world of the arts and aesthetics, and possible applications in modern working careers.
