Emergency Info and Contacts for students of the Globalization Program

The International PhD Academy offers an intensive training opportunity for PhD students, post-docs, and junior researchers from VIU's member institutions. These programs, held over the course of one week at VIU, focus on the latest research emerging from various disciplines, addressing topics with broad societal impacts.

Each PhD Academy is developed and delivered by a collaboration of at least three member universities, guided by a scientific coordinator and supported by VIU's institutional and organizational resources. The programs are distinguished by their interdisciplinary approach.

The PhD Academy also emphasizes the development of transversal skills essential for academic and professional growth. Workshops on scientific writing, project management, funding opportunities, proposal writing, science communication, and presentation skills are integral parts of the program.

Public communication of science and research has more and more become part of the researchers’ job, often demanded by research funders and policy makers as a pathway towards societal impact of research.

As the Covid-19 restrictions start to ease, we can begin to think of travel again and look forward to opportunities next year!

VIU will soon issue a new round of Erasmus+ calls for application for study, teaching, and training opportunities in the member universities in the EU, UK,  Israel, Russia, and Canada. Students, professors, and staff in VIU's Italian member universities are eligible to apply. 

VIU is now accepting applications for Erasmus+ grants for studies abroad during the second semester, 2018-2019.

VIU is now accepting applications for Erasmus+ grants for studies in VIU member universities in the European Union and in Israel. 

An information session for Erasmus+ grant recipients will take place during Orientation Week.

The deadline to submit the online form to have the Erasmus+ paperwork signed is March 3, 2023.

The aim of the second Conference Ethics and Digitalization - Live stream, 01.10.2020 is to disseminate information on how to use the potential of Artifcial Intelligence (AI) for the beneft of both humanity and the planet itself.

The narrative surrounding artificial intelligence, robotics, digitization and cybernetics has developed mainly from dystopian and dark visions of the future. Women and men in politics, business, research, the arts – in fact, anyone interested – needs to be informed about applying ethical, humanist principles and Europe’s democratic values to all digital processes so that the Internet, social media, AI, robotics and any other digital systems are placed in the service of people and not the other way round.

The regulation of tech giants and networked data protection that began a year ago in Europe must continue in a way that guarantees transparency and the right to privacy, reducing inequality and waste of resources while enhancing - gendered - innovation and sustainable growth. Many institutions, businesses and some parts of civil society are now also open to solutions in this direction.

The conference will be a platform for academics to explain their different approaches and for companies, foundations, projects and campaigns to present their ideas.

Theme
The European Union and East Asia are major actors in global governance. In a globalized world, the two regions are confronted with similar challenges, like financial crises, rising protectionism, climate change, human rights violations and poverty, that both require regional and global action and solutions. They also signed up to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, which were adopted in 2015. The SDGs will determine the course of the global social, ecological and economic agenda until 2030. However, this Global Agenda is now affected by the worldwide COVID pandemic. The pandemic has a huge impact on our economy and society. In this summer school we will specifically explore how COVID will affect key SDGs which relate to economy and society with a focus on SDGs related to economic growth, cities, trade and industry and innovation. The summer school will be run through a Massive Open Online Course and live lectures, seminars and student presentations bringing together European and Asian students and scholars.

The Summer School
The aim of the Euro-Asia Summer School ‘The Sustainable Development Goals before and after the COVID pandemic. European and Asian Perspectives on Global Governance’, organized by the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies (Belgium), Hitotsubashi University (Japan), Seoul National University (South Korea), the KDI School of Public Policy and Management (South Korea) and the Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals (Spain), is to bring together talented students from Asia and Europe to study key aspects of global governance from comparative perspectives. This is a key opportunity for young talents to meet and interact and therefore to facilitate inter-cultural dialogues on global governance.

The Europe Day in Venice 2024 will take place from May 3 to 31, organized by the City of Venice.

This will be the twelfth edition of the Festa dell'Europa in Venice, and will emphasize the "Right to vote", given the upcoming European Union elections in June.

This recognition confirms EUTOPIA as a chosen alliance of institutions working to build a European University of the future, creating a new model for higher education in Europe.

The idea of bringing together students and professors from 20 different universities, from different study backgrounds, of different ages to study and discuss current topics and challenges of our time is absolutely amazing and unique.

VIU offers the ideal framework and space for such an encounter on San Servolo. With its diverse and interdisciplinary curriculum, VIU enables students to create their own personal set of courses of interest. This shapes the students’ character and view of the world. This was the main reason why I decided to apply for a semester at VIU. I was amazed by the variety of courses and in particular by the specialization track “Environmental Management and Sustainable Development”. I wanted to learn more about the global challenges of our time, about sustainable development, climate change, and urban growth, but also about ecology and technology as challenges of ethics.

I am convinced that the ability to think and act interdisciplinary is a key feature in a globalized and changing world, and that competencies and knowledge beyond the own field of expertise is crucial for tackling critical global issues. This is also the reason why I am pursuing a graduate program in Intercultural Communication, after graduating with a M.Sc. in Biology from the LMU Munich. The Globalization Program at VIU represented the perfect addition to my academic portfolio as it allowed me to move across disciplines and cultures. And as I haven’t had the chance to do a semester abroad before, this was a great opportunity for an international, intercultural, and interdisciplinary experience. From this I will not only profit personally, but also in my future career which I see at the interface of science, communication, and politics.
Looking back, I can say that my expectations were not disappointed. On the contrary, my first semester was such an enriching experience that I prolonged my stay at VIU for another semester!

The productive and intercultural environment at VIU offered me the possibility to broaden my personal as well as my academic horizon, and to gain knowledge beyond my discipline. An eye-opening and unique experience! Moreover, it was a real pleasure to be part of the VIU community with fruitful exchanges of knowledge and creative ideas. I would highly recommend other students to apply for a semester at VIU, to build friendships for life in this exceptional city.

This significant expansion marks a pivotal moment as VIU approaches its thirty-year anniversary, and continues to grow and develop global engagement, further solidifying its position as a hub for interdisciplinary education, research, and collaboration.

On May 15, VIU hosted the VIULecture Blue Carbon, Sustainability and Europe, an educational screening of the docufilm Blue Carbon, followed by a thought-provoking debate on the critical role of Blue Carbon and European initiatives to underscore the importance of wetlands. These ecosystems have the potential to contribute significantly to mitigating climate change, aiding adaptation, and promoting sustainable development.

The film showcased coastal ecosystems, like mangroves, that excel at sequestering carbon dioxide from both the atmosphere and the ocean. The subsequent discussion drew comparisons with the Venice Lagoon, home to Europe’s largest coastal wetland.
