“VIU in 3 words? Course work: interdisciplinary. My time here has been: fun. And made good friends, so two words: good company.”

“I think there is a lot of emphasis placed on presenting your work and contributing in class, speaking with others. I think that is such an important skill, not only as an academic scholar, but going on work one day. That is where the sense of interdisciplinary comes in as well. You’re gonna be working with different people one day – there is a lot to take away from this, you are constantly exposed, working together, and I think it is really nice element to take away from my time here. ”

Caudio Corradetti, Italian
Associate professor of political philosophy and international relations at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”. My philosophical interests are oriented to the understanding of the interconnections between law and politics as well as the role of capitalism in society. I have been raised with the idea that interdisciplinary readings and reflections help the formulation of new and hopefully deeper views as well as increase the level of critical thinking.

My duty at VIU was to teach two courses, one on Global Governance and the other on a selection of classical texts of political philosophy. Both courses were for me very challenging, but in different ways.
In the first, whose long title was ‘Global Governance for Peace and Security, Cooperation and Development. At the Root of Cosmopolitan Constitutionalism’, I aimed at reconstructing the philosophical, political and legal development of the idea of a global governance, peace and justice among nations. In particular, I articulated conceptions for the emergence of a notion of global public authority and constitutionalism starting from the paradigm shift for new forms of authority conceptualizations. Students were asked to develop a critical approach and to reflect upon colonization processes, contemporary regional phenomena of constitutionalisation of multi-polities, as in the case of the European Union, and the relation between global wealth and authority. It was certainly an unusual course to offer to bachelor students but notwithstanding the demanding standard the students feedbacks were excellent.

The other course I offered was more of an introductory style. It attracted students with almost no background in philosophy. I remember a very talented Israeli student telling me right at the beginning: “I’m taking this course because I have never understood anything in philosophy!”. Eventually at the end he scored the highest grade. The course offered a detailed overview of the political philosophical development from ancient times to modernity. Lectures provided a selection of primary texts of classical authors accompanied by the support of secondary literature. Core topics included the definition of normative political thinking, as with the relation between morality and politics, morality and law as well as the role of individual and collective subjectivity. The course’s fil rouge was devoted to the capturing of the birth, development and decline of the State. This trajectory was analysed as part of a context of interstate relations, as with the arousal of the ius gentium as well as cosmopolitanism and/or liberal internationalist approaches. Organized around prominent key philosophers, the course has included a special section dedicated to the contemporary Italian political thought.

The choice to spend a semester at VIU was totally by chance. I did know about this programme and the membership of my university. One day I received a call of interest for filling-in a teaching at VIU and I applied, I found it was a great choice to make.
Venice and San Servolo are great places to stay both as a student and as a teacher. I had a great time meeting colleagues both local and international as well as students. There is a plenty of initiatives that are organized on weekly basis and which provide great opportunities for enjoying the beauty of the place. I’m still in contact and cooperate with some of the colleagues met there.

I believe that if you like experimenting yourself as a teacher in an international environment and if you are sensitive to the beauty of the contest then it would be harder to find reasons not to go. The VIU is for those who have an open-minded, progressive view of education and who like to meet people from a variety of backgrounds. Sometimes this is not an easy task, but it is certainly rewarding.

I found always a winning move to establish an empathy with students no matter whether they were Europeans, Africans, Asians etc. After all students from all over the world have similar expectations. They truly start from different background points, but organizing a course at VIU is to leave these differences in the back and to provide a new common starting point. This is not an easy task but of crucial importance.

I really enjoyed when with the class we decided to go in the garden around a long wooden table to have our lecture. It worked differently from usual and I believe it allowed a free way of thinking and doing philosophy.

Thanks to VIU, I also have the opportunity to go to Munich, Germany, to deliver a three-day seminar on my research on the cosmopolitan though by Kant. The place was somehow chosen by the topic I was researching on in those days. I wished to present my research to a German audience.

The unprecedented threat of climate change is posing a severe risk to human activities, due to the increasing frequency and magnitude of extreme events.

VIU is carrying out research defining a Socio‐Economic Regional Risk Assessment (SERRA) for the Belluno Province in partnership with Enel Foundation, and the Euro‐Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change (CMCC).

Establishing a European Competence Centre for Science Communication and an associated Science Communication Academy is the goal of the COALESCE project. 

COALESCE wants to gather and consolidate existing science communication knowledge, resources and tools from a variety of sources, while engaging science communication stakeholders in a co-creating process as well as in validating the Competence Centre’s products for their respective needs.

To achieve this objective, COALESCE aims to build and engage Communities of knowledge and Practice in science communication (CoPs).

We invite all researchers, science-communication professionals, journalists, policymakers, citizens, industry professionals – among other actors – to be part of our community of practice, where you will have the opportunity to be engaged in mutual learning, co-creation activities, training and be part of building the future European Competence Centre for Science Communication.

COALESCE is the new Horizon Europe project of which Venice International University is a partner. Over the next four years (2023-2027), the project will establish the European Competence Centre for Science Communication.

VIU is leading the creation of the Science Communication Academy to enhance the capacities of scientists, communication officers, journalists and decision-makers to support quality and effective science communication. Building on its year-long experience on training for researchers and professionals, and on the scicomm Toolkits produced in QUEST project, VIU is engaging with scicomm scholars and experts to design online and in-person training opportunities.  

The COALESCE project is establishing a European Competence Center for Science Communication and an associated Science Communication Academy (task led by VIU), to consolidate science communication knowledge, resources and tools from a variety of sources.

These will be made available to science communication stakeholders across Europe in ways that are useful and replicable in different contexts.
If you want to contribute and co-create the Competence Center, please join the COPs-Community of Practice: researchers, science-communication professionals, journalists, policymakers, citizens, industry professionals – among other actors – are invited to be part of our community of practice, where you will have the opportunity to be engaged in mutual learning, co-creation activities, training and be part of building the future European Competence Centre for Science Communication.

VIU Graduate activities are a unique opportunity to deepen specific knowledge through interdisciplinary lenses. Also, they offer highly qualified researchers opportunities to acquire transversal skills that not necessarily have been part of their disciplinary curriculum.

Science communication is one of those skills: more and more researchers find themselves to communicate their research to a wide audience, as it is the case with social media. This certainly might have a great impact in terms of visibility and recognition within the scientific community and, often, beyond but the message must be clear and coherent, and the messenger must be ready to positively and skillfully engage in (sometimes arduous) debates.

The Science Communication seminars offered within the VIU graduate seminars are based on the results and the Toolkits developed by QUEST project, coordinated by VIU and focusing on quality science communication: a series of Toolkits for scientists, journalists, museum explainers and social media managers are available in QUEST website, and can also be used on a free basis as self-learning tools.

The health, safety, and well-being of our VIU community is the primary focus that guides the decisions of VIU relative to COVID-19.
VIU decisions regarding the Academic Programs are informed by Italian national legislation, Veneto Regional legislation, Italian ministerial guidance and the recommendations of the scientific community.
The state of emergency ended in Italy in March 2022. Since then, all measures and restrictions in Italy have been gradually phased out, with the final restrictions lifted since August 11, 2023.

There are no longer any restrictions or special measures at Venice International University.

If you test positive for Covid: What the Law Requires

There is no longer any legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive for Covid (since August 11, 2023).

However, the following precautions are recommended:

• Wear a face mask (surgical mask or FFP2), when in contact with other people.
• If you are symptomatic, stay home until your symptoms subside.
• Wash hands often and/or use hand sanitizer.
• Avoid crowded environments.
• Avoid contact with people who are fragile, immunosuppressed, or pregnant, and avoid attending hospitals or nursing homes. This recommendation is particularly important for all healthcare and social-health care workers, who must therefore avoid contact with patients at risk.
• Inform the people with whom you have been in contact in the days immediately preceding the diagnosis, if elderly, frail or immunocompromised.
• Contact your doctor if you are frail or immunosuppressed, if the symptoms persist for longer than 3 days, or if your condition worsens.

If you are a Close Contact: What the Law Requires

No restrictive measures apply to people who have come into contact with cases of Covid-19.

However, it is recommended that you pay attention to the appearance of any symptoms suggestive of Covid-19 (fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue) in the days immediately following contact.
During these days you should avoid contact with other people who are fragile, immunocompromised, or pregnant. If you develop symptoms suggestive of Covid-19 during this period, a test is recommended (self-administered antigen, or PCR).

Because there are people coming from everywhere in the world sharing experiences and knowledge, things they do differently. So it is an opportunity to be in contact with people from different parts of the globe. And it is not everywhere we can experience a moment like that. It is an opportunity to learn from them.”

“In this sense of globalization, there are some things I would not have studied in my own university. It helped me to see in a broader perspective some questions. It brought to me new perspectives from my own studies. Every time you study and see a subject, you can relate it to your own subject with a new perspective. “

VIU acquires personal data of students from the Member universities, and directly from the students via the application form on the VIU website (www.univiu.org) or during any other application processes related to VIU program for which you applied.
Personal data is any information which relates to a living person, and from which they can be identified.

VIU will use the personal data you provide on the application form, together with the supporting documents requested and any additional details provided by your home university, or any referee or recorded during any interview process. This data will include your name, date of birth, email and postal addresses, telephone numbers, academic record etc.

VIU may, in rare cases and for specific purposes, collect sensitive (special category) personal data. According to GDPR, special category data is defined as information about racial or ethnic origins; political opinions; religious beliefs or other beliefs; trade union membership; physical or mental health; sexual life or orientation; criminal allegations, proceedings or convictions.

Why are we collecting your data?
Venice International University needs to collect and process your personal information in order to perform its educational, pastoral, statutory and administrative purposes and responsibilities to you and others. This processing will take place before, during and after your studies at VIU.

How we will use this data?
VIU will process the personal data for institutional and academic purposes (such as academic activities, for research and administrative purposes).
Examples of processing for these purposes include, but are not limited to: processing information about your studies and achievements; your financial relationship with VIU; processing information to enable you to use VIU and auxiliary facilities (eg. Housing) and to allow effective communication with you; processing information to survey you or to conduct research into academic achievements to enable VIU to improve academic and pastoral provision; and processing information to fulfil our statutory responsibilities.

Students’ personal information will be stored and processed by electronic and non-electronic means.
Communications to the students’ email addresses will be in order to share information, updates and opportunities regarding VIU Academic Programs, and Venice International University in general.

If we are sharing your information with others who are we sharing it with?
In the fulfilment of VIU’s responsibilities and purposes, personal information collected by the VIU may be shared among the member universities.
In addition, VIU may disclose your personal information when relevant and as required to other bodies outside of the VIU membership in order to fulfil these responsibilities and purposes. Such bodies include but are not limited to:
_institutions or private companies or individuals for the arrangement of students’ accommodation (i.e. San Servolo Servizi Metropolitani)
_relevant public bodies, including but not limited to the Questura, embassies and Local Authorities
_organizations which provide specific services on behalf of VIU, including, but not limited to e-learning services such as Moodle, the Alumni database etc.

How long is your information kept for?
We must store your personal datafor as long as necessary to meet VIU responsibilities. Your information will be kept as part of your student record and may be used in the future to provide records to you, or to your home university. Therefore data will be stored for an indeterminate period of time.

What are your rights and how to enforce them?
The following are your rights that are guaranteed by the EU General Data Protection Regulation, which comes in to effect on May 25, 2018.
