Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Training on Green Growth

Green Growth is a brand new topic for the training activities organized in cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). The focus of the course that will be held on March 16-27, and addressed to 42 participants, highlights the impacts of economic activities on the environment and the need to find solutions to tackle this issue. Pollution in China is in fact mainly attributable to the primary and secondary industries, which still have a very important role in supporting the Country's development.

The agenda has therefore been drafted as to present tools, strategies and technologies developed by Italy and other European Countries to help manage the possible negative effects of production processes on the environment.

Starting from policies at European and National level, the focus will then move to specific tools such as the Life Cycle Assessment, which, by analyzing the entire production process from the cradle to the grave, can help companies to target their pollution reduction activities. Lectures and site visits will also present best practices for the management of clean energy sources and efficiency, waste and waste water, emission of greenhouse gases and other pollutants, agriculture and food quality and safety.

Chinese Academy of Social Sciences: Two Courses in March

The activities of the Sino Italian Cooperation Program (SICP) Advanced Training Program will resume in March 2014 after the New Year break with the arrival of two Chinese delegations selected by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS).

 

Both courses will introduce a new issue among the ones traditionally organized with this institution.

 

The first course (March 2-13) will focus on Environment and Health. The 38 participants will explore the most common means through which we come in contact with our daily environment, such as air, water, soil and food, and analyze the main challenges in offering a healthy environment to our communities. The experiences of Italy and Europe in developing new policies and tools for health protection will be discussed and some visit will be organized as case studies.

 

The second course (March 6-27) will be dedicated to Green Growth. The agenda of the course will include lectures and site visits focusing on the impact of economic activities on the environment and how to make them more sustainable. Particular attention will be given to the secondary sector, discussing all the interactions between the production process and the environment (raw material and energy use, waste and waste water production, carbon and other air pollutant emission, etc.), and presenting tools, strategies and technologies to help manage possible negative effects.

Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Training on Environment and Health_March 2014

On March 2-13, 2014, a delegation of 42 participants selected by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) will be in Italy to attend a course focused on "Environment and Health"

 

This important topic opens the 2014 training year at VIU and the choice of CASS to dedicate an entire training to the connection between the environment and health is a recognition of how the impacts of pollution on human well-being are felt more and more as an obstacle to a sustainable development.

 

The course agenda will explore the most common means through which we come in contact with our daily environment, such as air, water, soil and food, and analyze the main challenges in offering a healthy environment to our communities. VIU joins IAERE as Institutional Member

Venice International University, through its Thematic Environmental Networks Center (TEN), has become Institutional Member of the Italian Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (IAERE) .
IAERE is a scientific association that brings together professors, researchers and students in the field of environment and resource economics, which was launched in 2012. The main aim of the association is the promotion, development and dissemination of research results and cooperation among universities, research institutions, companies, trade unions and environmental NGOs in order to increase the productivity and the scientific impact of their contributions.
IAERE is part of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE) network, of which VIU is a member since 2006.

VIU, EAERE and FEEM have been cooperating since 2000 in organizing a Summer School series held at VIU, every year addressing different aspects of Environmental and Resource Economy.

VIU Working Paper by prof. M. Montini, ELT, University of Siena

We are glad to announce that a new VIU Working Paper on Towards a new instrument for promoting sustainability beyond the EIA and the SEA: the Holistic Impact Assessment (HIA), written by prof. Massimiliano Montini from the Environmental Legal Team (ELT) of the University of Siena, is newly released and now available in the VIU publications section.

The text presents an the analysis of the main features and the most relevant shortcomings of two important instruments widely used to assess the negative environmental impact of projects and plans on the environment, namely the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA).
In light of the reached results, a new instrument derived from the merging of the IEA and SEA is discussed: the Holistic Impact Assessment (HIA).
