In a time where reporting about COVID-19 is no longer merely a prerogative of science journalists, the importance of empowering and training journalists, including those without specialist scientific knowledge is more relevant than ever.

Among the several outputs to be released by the QUEST Project in the second half of 2020 is JECT.AI, a tool for journalists based on AI support. This tool has been created to allow journalists to report about science more effectively.

The development of JECT.AI is led by QUEST partner City, University of London. JECT.AI takes advantage of a variety of automation systems in order to support journalists incorporating writing practices generally associated with good science journalism.

On June 11-13 2021 we are organizing the second edition of the "Venice World Multidisciplinary Conference on Republics and Republicanism"

Keynotes | Quentin Skinner | Cécile Laborde

The keynote speakers will be Quentin Skinner, professor at Queen Mary University of London, author of Liberty Before Liberalism (1998) and co-editor and contributor to Republicanism: A Shared European Heritage, 2 volumes (2002), a classic in the field and Cécile Laborde, professor of Political Theory, University of Oxford, and author of Critical Republicanism. The Hijab Controversy in Political Philosophy (2008).

CALL FOR PAPERS

The call for panel themes has closed with great response. The call for papers is now open. We invite all the speakers suggested in the panel proposals and any other scholar interested in participating in the Conference to send a paper title with an abstract of approximately 250 words plus their CV and full contact address (including email) to luca.pes@univiu.org and in CC silvia.casalini@univiu.org. Deadline: November 30, 2020.

In the scope of the Icarus Project cofinanced by the ITA-HR Interreg Program, VIU organizes an on-line training path for Public Authority with the aim of increasing the capacity of Organizations in developing sound and sustainable projects and investments on green mobility.

On the 11^th November, the webinar n.4 “Open data to improve the mobility planning” will host the transport expert Gennaro Ciccarelli.

SPROUT ha completed the analysis of the pilot cities specific scenarios, a work that can be read on the section “Resources” of the SPROUT website here

VIU_TeDIS is one of the partners of the SPROUT project: Sustainable Policy RespOnse to Urban mobility Transition, financed by the H2020 Program.

SPROUT provides a new city-led innovative and data driven policy response to address the impacts of the emerging mobility patterns, digitally-enabled operating and business models, and transport users’ needs.

A new University of Exeter lecture series will examine the role of humanities experts in tackling global crises, including health, the climate emergency and racial injustice. The online events, free and open to the public, will also showcase discussions on how humanities research can help universities better conduct their global activities and be agents of positive change.

The EU Commission has launched a Manifesto to maximise the accessibility of research results in the fight against COVID-19.

The manifesto provides guiding principles for beneficiaries of EU research grants for coronavirus prevention, testing, treatment and vaccination to ensure that their research results will be accessible for all and guarantee a return on public investment.

The project has published the cross-border action plan for improving maritime and multimodal freight transport. The plan includes guidelines, priority measures, and KPIs that will be tested in pilot actions starting in September 2020. This cross border strategy was developed through the analysis of best practices in ICT tools and policies, territorial needs assessments, and training opportunities for the project partners.

Sustainable Ports is a new research project funded by the Interreg Italy-Croatia Program. The project will improve the safety and environmental sustainability of marine and coastal transport services and nodes by promoting multimodality. 
SUSPORT intends to strengthen the institutional capacity and cross-border governance of the ports of the Programme Area in this sector, enhancing environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.

VIU has completed its contribution to the project through the coordination of the seven Action Plans of the Port Partners. The 7 action plans for sustainable and low-carbon ports cover a broad range of fields (clean shipping, green upgrading of port machinery, installation of emission control systems, truck flow management, etc.). The plans were designed considering local port operations and needs in order to identify tailor-made solutions.  

Registrations for courses for the 1st Semester of AY 2020-21 (Fall 2020) of the Gobalization Program will open on July 28, at 3 pm Italian time.

Artificial Intelligence, an increasingly relevant topic also with concern to the latest pandemic challenge the world is facing, is one of QUEST project’s main areas of investigation with reference to Science Communication.

The ongoing reflection on the COVID-19 outbreak has opened the floor to various debates, one of them being the impact of digital innovation and technologies in containing the pandemic.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has put each of us in front of new and unexpected rules and habits. Similarly, each of us has been confronted with a massive communication on the virus: epidemiologists, virologists, natural scientists, health scientists, social scientists, economists are everyday in the public media, communicating with people.

In the effort to offer citizens effective and reliable communication on scientific topics that have a significant impact on their daily lives, Climate Change is certainly one to take into consideration. In this perspective, QUEST project has selected Climate Change as one of the communication areas to tackle in its research.

At the end of May, 64 students of 13 nationalities concluded their semester of courses at VIU with the exam week. The semester, focused on Environmental Management and Sustainable Development, featured 25 courses taught by 19 professors from the member universities of VIU.

The Closing Ceremony of the Spring 2020 term of the Globalization Program will take place on Friday, 5 June 2020, at 3.15 pm, via Webex.
