Theory and Practice. Heritage / Present and Future Perspectives

The aim of the conference is to discuss Republicanism in a broad, multidisciplinary and worldwide perspective, and to initiate a series of such meetings to be held in Venice every two years.

During recent decades, Republicanism has become a central concern in political theory and history. This body of thought emerged as the main alternative to Liberalism, when Marxism lost this role after the fall of the Berlin Wall. There is a renewed interest today, while searching for solutions to mounting populism and personalization of power; the issue of inequality and the crisis of democracies.

The Summer School on Responsible Capitalism is an initiative of VIU in cooperation with the two member universities Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, the University of Lausanne, and, starting from the 7th editon, the University of Exeter.

It aims at the development of ideas that promote a more sustainable future by bringing together young scholars from all over the world to discuss their ideas on the future of Capitalism from the microlevel of individual decision-making to the organizational and the societal level. Participants are made familiar with recent research from a broad set of disciplines. They work on their ability to engage in the transdisciplinary discourse which is required for the development of innovative answers to grand sustainability challenge.

The School is open to PhD students, post-doc researchers in Management, Strategy, Organization Theory, Finance, Economic Sociology, and related disciplines from universities worldwide.

“REBALANCE” Business and Democracy closing Symposium
The 9th edition of the Summer School was jointly coorganized with the Horizon Europe-UKRI “Rebalance” project on the relationship between capitalism and democracy (GA 101061342).
Five lectures addressed critical intersections of business, human rights, and legal accountability. These lectures aimed to deepen understanding of corporate responsibilities and the practical steps to reinforce human rights protections in diverse contexts.

It has been a very busy summer here at VIU!

Overall we have welcomed more than 200 students and 80 professors to the Academic Programs since June, and we will have another two Summer Schools, a PhD Academy, and a new GP semester kicking off in September.

On the occasion of the Feast of St. Mark awards ceremony on April 25 at the Palazzo Ducale, a special award was presented to Ambassador Umberto Vattani, President of Venice International University for his service to the City of Venice.

With the initiative “Saturdays for Future” (S4F), ASviS - the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development - is organizing a national day of mobilization to promote responsible production and consumption.
The initiative aims to mobilize consumers, business and civil society organizations in order to stimulate a change in their consumption styles as well as production models to promote sustainable development, as envisaged by Goal 12 of the 2030 Agenda.
The objective of the S4Fs initiative is to improve consumer habits, transforming Saturday, the day most people do their weekly shopping, into a day of awareness and concrete commitment for sustainable and responsible production and consumption.
Inspired by and closely connected to the global initiative of “Fridays for Future” and the promotion of policies against climate change, the first "Saturday for Future" will be September 28th, the day after the global student strike against climate change.
"Consuming in a conscious and responsible way means, first of all, avoiding waste, minimizing waste, recycling and responsibly choosing the products you buy, looking at the sustainability of our development model", declares the spokesman of ASviS, Enrico Giovannini. "The change of habits can trigger a virtuous process, positively affect production models and make companies more responsible and more sustainable, not only on an environmental level but also on a social level, first of all towards their employees". As ASviS President Pierluigi Stefanini recalls, "the proposal to make Saturday, the day after the climate mobilization, when more than half of people habitually spend weekly, the day in favor of environmental and social sustainability was welcomed by many subjects of Italian society. We are therefore confident about the impact that this initiative will have in the months and years to come, with concrete benefits also for the budgets of Italian families ".

To organize Saturdays for Future, ASviS launched the website www.saturdaysforfuture.it, that will monitor the events taking place all over Italy and will contain useful information and documents. 

ASviS invites everyone to take part and work together for Saturdays for Future and addresses in particular:
• consumers, especially young people;
• over 230 ASviS member organizations;
• teachers;
• consumers’ associations;
• business associations and trade unions;
• companies;
• media that want to raise awareness among the general public through communication on responsible consumer and sustainable development.

Focus
All stakeholders, from researchers to professionals, policy makers and citizens must contribute to achieve sustainable development and the SDGs.  Researchers have to provide the acquired knowledge, whereas professionals and policy makers need the capacity to face and manage complex issues. Citizens’ engagement is necessary in order to promote a constructive dialogue that supports both research and policy.

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has put each of us in front of new and unexpected rules and habits. Similarly, each of us has been confronted with a massive communication on the virus: epidemiologists, virologists, natural scientists, health scientists, social scientists, economists are everyday in the public media, communicating with people.

Science communication has entered the public debate at different levels: it supports the societal dimension of science, levers significant funding opportunities for research, and contributes to build a successful dialogue with decision makers.
